Happy 75th birthday, Mary Tyler Moore

Everett Collection

Happy 75th birthday, Mary Tyler Moore. You might just make it after all.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Mary Tyler Moore turns 75 today, but to millions of Americans, she's?still 32, forever driving from her small hometown to Minnesota's Twin Cities on a sunny freeway in 1970. How will she make it on her own? This world is awfully big, and girl, this time she's all alone.

But she had determination, moxie, smarts, charm, and something Lou Grant hated -- spunk.

After all, she'd already captured America's hearts in another beloved show when she played Laura Petrie, New Rochelle's "hostess with the mostess" on "The Dick Van Dyke Show." There's something magical about this scene, in which she dances in her famed capri pants. What, your parents' parties didn't involve conga drums and elaborately choreographed dances in the living room? Ours either, but this show made us wish they did.

Before "Dick Van Dyke,"?a teenage MTM played the goofy little sprite Happy Hotpoint in?dozens of appliance commercials. You might not recognize her here. (Watch the whole ad though if you want a classic 1956 spiel on dishwashers.)

She was a million miles from Laura Petrie or Mary Richards in 1980's "Ordinary People," which earned her an Oscar?nomination. Just watch the trailer (and wow, did that movie have a heckuva cast all the way around) and see her brittle, repressed Beth trying to hold things together. Not exactly the mother Laura or Mary would have turned out to be.

But of course, we can't forget "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." I grew up in Minnesota in the 1970s, and although only the opening credits were shot there, it was still a point of pride for residents.?If you go to downtown Minneapolis, you can still eat at the very restaurant table (marked with a plaque)?in the IDS Crystal Court where Mary and then-husband Grant Tinker are seen?dining in the credits.

Everyone knew where the house was that was shown as Mary's, and also knew the real reason why Mary moved to an apartment in later seasons. When the studio came back to film the same giant lakeside home's exterior, its owner hung an "IMPEACH NIXON" banner on the home, forcing them to shoot elsewhere?(it was 1973, after all).

I once interviewed one of the Toughskins-clad schoolkids who appear in the credits crossing a street?with Mary and a school patrol. He was just walking home from school with friends one day, he said, when a man yelled "Hey! You kids wanna be on TV?" Half the gang scattered, and half stuck around and when ordered, crossed the street while Mary strode along with them, clutching a grocery bag. I sometimes wonder if the half that scattered know exactly what they missed out on.

?There are too many classic "MTM" scenes to share, but Chuckles the Clown gets mentioned more than any other, and for good reason. Watch the bit where Mary scolds Murray for cracking wise -- "A man has DIED!" -- and then see if you can't feel her embarrassment when it turns out she's the one who can't stop laughing. Until the moment she's told to laugh, when of course she bursts into tears.

What's your favorite Mary Tyler Moore character, scene or line? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Upon further review, Tim Tebow has one fewer interception, and the Buffalo Bills lost a franchise record. In a scoring change announced by the Bills on Wednesday, the third of Tebow?s four interceptions in a 40-14 loss last weekend is now being ruled a lost fumble. It happened midway through the fourth quarter when Tebow had the ball knocked loose by linebacker Chris Kelsay.

Democrats bet Obama-bashing in Iowa will backfire on GOP

In Iowa, the daily bombardment of criticism aimed at President Barack Obama seems to have no end.

?The United States has failed miserably to secure our border,? GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry said in Muscatine the other day.

At about the same time, fellow Republican Mitt Romney was blasting Obama for creating what he called an ?entitlement society? that is making people more government-dependent.

?We will not surrender our dreams to the failures of this president,? Romney said just days before the Jan. 3 Iowa presidential caucuses.

But if Iowa Democrats are discouraged, they hide it well. In interview after interview, they insist that the pounding from Republicans is backfiring and will motivate a Democratic base that?s been dormant for months. They said they are confident Obama will win the state in November.

?We?re getting fired up for our caucuses,? said Pat Sass, chairwoman of the Black Hawk County Democratic Party. ?I think he (Obama) will do just fine. These Republicans are going on and on, and so much of it is lies. I don?t think it?s going to be a problem at all.?

Sass said she had commitments from more than 1,000 county voters to attend the Jan. 3 Democratic caucuses, which are receiving far less attention than the Republican contest because Obama is unchallenged. Eight Republicans are vying to win the GOP caucuses the same night.

Sass said getting attendance commitments from those 1,000 hasn?t been hard. ?We?re fired up and ready to go,? she said.

Although Obama beat Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election in Iowa by 54 percent to 44 percent, his 2012 prospects remain tougher to project.

?You?ve got a lot of Democrats saying, ?I wish he would just lead and get up there and fight back,??? said Drake University political scientist Dennis Goldford. ?There?s that sort of disappointment there.?

Much depends on whom the Republicans eventually nominate, he said. Obama?s ?still in a position where he?s got to fight for it here,? Goldford said.

A University of Iowa Hawkeye Poll released Dec. 15 showed two GOP front-runners, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, holding slight leads over Obama in a state where the jobless rate just dropped from 6 percent to 5.7 percent in November.

In a sample of nearly 1,000 registered Iowa voters, Gingrich led Obama by 46 percent to 43 percent, with 11 percent undecided, while Romney led Obama 43 percent to 42 percent with 15 percent undecided.

Although Iowa offers only six Electoral College votes next year (down from seven in 2008), it?s a state that many Democratic analysts believe Obama must carry to remain in the White House.

Obama?s campaign appears to understand Iowa?s significance. While Republican candidates in the state have no more than one office each, Obama?s Organizing for America already has eight, including one in Sioux City in far western Iowa, and another in Dubuque on the state?s eastern border.

Organizing for America said it has already held more than 1,000 training and planning sessions, house parties and phone banks across the state and has made more than 250,000 phone calls to supporters.

It also has announced that the president will speak with Iowa supporters on caucus night via a live webcast that will be seen at caucus sites across the state.

?This is another opportunity for President Obama to reach out and speak directly to voters on the ground in Iowa,? said Obama?s Iowa state director, Derek Eadon.

Obama backers insist that the effort now under way will remain in operation all the way through the 2012 election.

?We?ve built a grass-roots campaign,? said Iowa Organizing for America spokesman John Kraus. ?Look at where we?ll be on Jan. 4 looking forward to next November compared to where the Republicans are going to be, which is shutting off the lights, leaving town and going to another state.?

Goldford said all the organizing will help Obama.

?Their task is to get the base enthused again and especially get the independents back,? he added.

Nationwide, turnout among Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections plummeted far more than it did among Republicans compared to 2008, Goldford noted.

?What the Obama people have to do is make the 2012 electorate a lot more like the 2008 electorate than the 2010 electorate,? he pointed out.

If raw enthusiasm is any indicator, Iowa Democrats think they?re already in a good place. While they won?t match the 240,000 or so Democrats who turned out for the 2008 caucus when Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards fought for the nomination, they think they?ll post solid numbers on Jan. 3.

In Dubuque County, Democratic chair Walt Pregler expects as many as 1,500 Democrats to turn out on caucus night. That?s nothing compared to four years ago, he said, but not bad considering how aggressively Republicans have attacked the president over the last four years.

?It has devastated him,? Pregler said of the barrage of criticism. ?But it?s going to take a lot of people on the Republican side to try to explain all the boo-boos they?ve made trying to block everything he?s wanted.?

Jennifer Herrington, chair of the Democratic Party in Page County near Iowa?s southwest corner, expects a 100-person turnout. She said the evening will be a celebration of the president?s accomplishments. ?We?re excited,? she said.

Herrington and Pregler said Obama?s cause might be helped if he visited the state shortly before the caucuses just as President Bill Clinton did in 1996, two days before that year?s caucuses.

Clinton, eager to counter all the criticism aimed his way by GOP candidates such as Bob Dole, spoke to a crowd of 15,000 at the University of Iowa and reminded them that, ?This election fundamentally is about you, and don?t you ever forget it.?

No such in-the-flesh visit from Obama is planned, which doesn?t bother Anita Martin, chair of the Marion County Democratic Party. ?People I talk to are very enthusiastic about him and realize the problems he?s been going through,? she said. ?I don?t get out and talk to that many people who are not Obama fans.?

An all Apple family celebrates second anniversary of living completely Microsoft-free

Dec 27, 2011 - 05:30 PM EST ? AAPL: 406.53 (+3.20, +0.79%) | NASDAQ: 2625.20 (+6.56, +0.25%)

?Back in April, I proudly declared my second anniversary of living completely Microsoft-free,? Ed Brill blogs for his eponymous site. ?Beyond Microsoft-free, though, the point of that blog entry was how much Apple technology had entered my life in the last few years.?

[Ed Brill is Director, Messaging and Collaboration, IBM Lotus software. - MacDailyNews Ed.]

?Earlier this month, IBM started a conversion of our corporate mobile device program, in line with what had been disclosed externally a few months ago,? Brill writes. ?For the first time, I had the opportunity to have an iPhone and have IBM manage the billing. It meant buying my own phone, but the opportunity to move not just in a Microsoft-free direction, but an all-Apple direction, was too good to pass up.?

?The switch was so simple, I almost didn?t realize it had happened,? Brill explains. ?When I first powered up the iPhone on Friday afternoon, and clicked through the setup options, an error suddenly popped up on my old [BlackBerry] phone, that the SIM was no longer provisioned. A few minutes later, I logged onto a Lotus Mobile Connect gateway on ibm.com, and Notes Traveler and LMC were being provisioned on the device. The app store app already knew what apps I had on my iPad, so installing IBM Sametime and IBM Connections were both single-tap actions. My contacts synced from Notes through Traveler. In short, save some recent images shot with the camera on my old phone, I didn?t have to do anything to transition from one device to another, and I?m up and running on the 8th piece of Apple gear in production use in my household. It.Just.Works.?

Earth's northern half plunged into darkness by axial tilt! Will sunlight ever return?

It sure will! The Winter Solstice occurs at 12:30 a.m. EST. After that, the days will start getting longer again.?

Winter officially arrives late Wednesday or in the wee hours of Thursday, depending on the time zone you are in.

The official time corresponds to 12:30 a.m. EST (9:30 p.m. PST, or 5:30 a.m. Universal Time) Thursday (Dec. 22). This is the point when the northern half of our planet will face directly away from the sun.

This means that days, which have up until now been growing shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, will begin to lengthen.

This happens because the Earth rotates on an axis that is tilted by 23.5 degrees, so the planet leans one way or another as it travels around the sun. This doesn't make much difference for folks living around the Earth's equator, but for those of us farther north, or south, this tilt?creates seasons.

The winter solstice marks the end of fall and the beginning of winter. During the solstice, the northern half of the Earth is facing away from the sun, hence it will experience its shortest day of the year as the planet rotates.

The effect of this tilt, and of the solstice, depends on your latitude. Everything above the Arctic Circle will remainshrouded in darkness, with no sun?that day, and to the north,?the North Pole?goes without sunlight for months. Farther south in the Northern Hemisphere, the solstice day becomes longer.

The opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere. There, the December solstice marks the arrival of summer. ?

For those of us in the north, the days may begin to grow longer, but the coldest days are still to come. This is because ocean temperatures?drive much of the weather?on the continents, and they continue to cool in the relative lack of sunlight this time of year.?

Mass. woman says TSA confiscated frosted cupcake

(AP) ? A woman who just flew back home from Las Vegas says an airport security officer confiscated her frosted cupcake because he thought the icing on it could be a security risk.

Rebecca Hains said the Transportation Security Administration agent at McCarran International Airport took her cupcake Wednesday, telling her its frosting was enough like a gel to violate TSA restrictions on allowing liquids and gels onto flights to prevent them from being used as explosives.

"I just thought this was terrible logic," Hains said Friday.

Hains, who lives in Peabody, just north of Boston, said the agent didn't seem concerned that the cupcake could actually be explosive, just that it fit some bureaucratic definition about what was prohibited. She said he even offered to let her eat it away from the airport security area.

Hains, a 35-year-old communications professor at Salem State University, said she told the agent she had passed through security at Boston's Logan International Airport earlier in the week with two cupcakes packaged in jars, gifts from a student. But she said the agent told her that just meant TSA in Boston didn't do its job.

The TSA, which is entrusted with protecting the nation's transportation system, was reviewing the incident, agency spokesman Nico Melendez said. Passengers are allowed to take cakes and cupcakes through checkpoints, he said.

Hains ultimately surrendered the cupcake. But she said the encounter highlighted a lack of common sense by the agent and the ludicrousness of TSA policies.

"It's not really about the cupcake; I can get another cupcake," she said. "It's about an encroachment on civil liberties. We're just building up a resistance and tolerance to all these things they're doing in the name of security, when it's really theater. It is not keeping us safe."

The Congressional Grill: House Co-Sponsor Defends SOPA (TCTV)

bill owensThe Internet is up in arms about the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and for good reason. It could potentially block and censor sites for alleged copyright infringement without full due process. Companies that support the bill are facing boycotts (GoDaddy just withdrew its support for this reason). But people on the two sides of the debate still don't see eye to eye, which is why we invited one of the SOPA's co-sponsors, Congressman Bill Owens (D-NY), to address the issues. We captured the conversation in the video above.

New tool offers unprecedented access for root studies

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Plant roots are fascinating plant organs -- they not only anchor the plant, but are also the world's most efficient mining companies. Roots live in darkness and direct the activities of the other organs, as well as interact with the surrounding environment. Charles Darwin posited in The Power of Movement of Plants that the root system acts as a plant's brain.

Due to the difficulty of accessing root tissue in intact live plants, research of these hidden parts has always lagged behind research on the more visible parts of plants. But now: a new technology--developed jointly by Carnegie and Stanford University--could revolutionize root research. The findings will be published in the large-scale biology section of the December issue of The Plant Cell.

Understanding roots is crucial to the study of plant physiology because they serve as the interface between a plant and the soil--being solely responsible for taking up water and essential mineral nutrients. Roots must respond quickly to various environmental conditions such as water availability (for example, when being soaked by rain after a period of drought). They must find and exploit nutrients; they must respond to salinization and acidification of the soil; and they must integrate diverse signals such as light and gravity. All of these aspects are very difficult to analyze because of a root's inaccessibility in the soil.

The research team's efforts could revolutionize the entire field of root studies. The team is composed of a group of plant scientists, including the paper's lead author, Guido Grossmann, along with his Carnegie colleagues (Woei-Jiun Guo, David Ehrhardt and Wolf Frommer) and a group of chemical engineers from Stanford University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, (Rene Sit, Stephen Quake and Matthias Meier).

The new technology, called the RootChip, allowed the research team to study roots of eight individual seedlings at the same time, and to alter their growth environment simultaneously or independently and with extraordinary precision. Optical sensors, developed and inserted into the root tissue by Frommer's team, allowed the researchers to examine how the roots responded to changes in nutrient supply levels in real time.

"This new tool provides a major advance for studying root biology at the cellular and subcellular level," said Wolf Frommer, director of Carnegie's plant biology department. "The growth conditions can be freely varied over several days, allowing us to monitor actual growth and development of roots and root hairs and using our optical biosensors to study nutrient acquisition and carbon sequestration in real time."

The RootChip was capable of monitoring a root's response to changing levels of the sugar glucose in the surrounding environment. Root growth slowed down when the leaves were not exposed to light, as predicted, because the leaf's photosynthesis is required to supply the energy for root growth. The RootChip also revealed the long-suspected fact that galactose, a sugar highly similar to glucose, is toxic to roots and inhibits their growth and function.

The RootChip is a generic tool and can be altered to test any aspect of root physiology that can be analyzed visually. It can easily be modified to study more than 30 seedlings at the same time and can be expanded for use with plants used to make biofuels, such as Brachypodium and foxtail millet.

Romney's Medicare Plan Gets Bipartisan Cover (The Atlantic Wire)

Mitt Romney is still second in many polls, but he looks like he's pretty confident that the Republican presidential nomination is his as Republicans work to make the general election a little more easy for him. Romney was magnanimous at Thursday's primary debate, avoiding saying mean things to Newt Gingrich's face. "Romney thinks Gingrich is already fading," The Washington Post's Aaron Blake writes. He's "back in front-runner mode,"?Reuters' John Whitesides says.?And why shouldn't he be confident? It looks like everyone else thinks he's going to be the nominee. Conservatives are falling in line behind Romney:?National Review begged voters not to pick Gingrich Thursday. And wonky Republican dreamboat Paul Ryan got Oregon Democrat Ron Wyden to sign onto a compromise version of his previously unpopular Medicare overhaul plan. It just so happens to be Romney's Medicare plan.

Related: GOP Voters Think Gingrich Has a Better Shot at Beating Obama

"This is a potentially gigantic move," NBC News' First Read writes. "We know some Democrats think they can STILL run against the Romney-Ryan plan, but the bipartisan stamp of approval in push-backs from someone that isn?t viewed as someone who is simply a centrist Democrat trying to survive in a red state, is a pretty good response."?The beauty of the compromise,?New York's?Jonathan Chait?writes, is that Ryan "has found a way to protect Mitt Romney." Ryan's initial plan was unpopular -- which is probably why Gingrich initially called it "right-wing social engineering" to the shock and horror of many conservatives -- ?but Romney said he supports it last week. That made it easier to attack Gingrich in the primary, Chait writes, but it could hurt Romney in the general election. Chait?continues:

"Wyden?s support gives Romney an out. He can now thread the needle between supporting Ryan, who has unassailable prestige within the Party, without endorsing the details of his plan. All he has to do is simply say he supports the plan Ryan and Democrat Ron Wyden came up with. Now the Ryan plan is no longer an albatross around the neck of the Republican presidential candidate."

Romney was pretty obvious in looking ahead to the general election in Thursday's debate,?Politico's Mike Allen writes. Check out how he preempted attacks from President Obama on his business record:

?"I think the president is going to... go after me and say, 'You know, in businesses that you've invested in, they didn't all succeed. Some failed. Some laid people off. And he'll be absolutely right.' But if you look at all the businesses we invested in, over a hundred different businesses, they added tens of thousands of jobs...

In the real world, some things don't make it, and I believe I've learned from my successes and my failures. The president, I'll look at and say: 'Mr. President, how did you do when you were running General Motors as the president, took it over? Gee, you closed down factories. You closed down dealerships. And he'll say: 'Well, I did that to save the business.' Same thing with us, Mr. President. We did our very best to make those businesses succeed. I'm pleased that they did, and I've learned the lessons of how the economy works. This president doesn't know how the economy works. I believe to create jobs, it helps to have created jobs."

Diana Gonzalez-Jones, J.R. Martinez?s Girlfriend, Is Pregnant!

Congratulations to J.R. Martinez and his girlfriend, Diana Gonzalez-Jones, as they are expecting a baby! The soon to be new parents are said to be ecstatic! The pregnancy news comes fresh off J.R.’s Dancing With The Stars win with partner Karina Smirnoff. This is turning out to be quite a year for the former All My Children star! While he captured the hearts of many when he began his run on DWTS, I already knew that J.R. was an amazing man, thanks to his joining the cast in 2008 on my sorely missed soap, All My Children, where he played the role of Army vet Brot Monroe. It was on the AMC set that he met his beautiful lady love, Diana Gonzalez-Jones. She served as an assistant to the executive producer. They became fast friends but didn’t officially start dating until last year. Diana was in the audience every single week during the DWTS competition, beaming with pride for her hero, and we could see some AMC alums in the audience as well, cheering on their good friend and former castmate. Earlier this week, Diana accompanied J.R. to the fifth annual CNN Heroes event, where J.R. and scores of other [...]

Anne Hathaway aims to shed pounds with her wedding dress diet!

Dec 7th

The gorgeous Anne Hathaway has graced the big screen in many exciting movies but now she is set to star in a production all of her very own ? her wedding day ? she has decided to embark upon a fitness regime that will ensure that she looks super-stunning as she glides down the proverbial aisle on the big day.

Whilst a firm date for the wedding has not yet been announced, there are rumours that the big event will be in the spring of 2012, which leaves Anne just a few months to get into shape ? not that she needs it, as the superstar actress already looks great. However, like every bride to be, Anne wants to look and feel as beautiful and confident as possible on the special day and hopes that her so called ?wedding dress diet? will get her there.

Of course, nobody knows what sort of dress Anne will choose yet and it is?rumored?that the wedding will be quite a low key affair rather than the type that is plastered across every glossy magazine on the shelves. However, this doesn?t mean that Anne won?t pick a fabulous wedding gown? and after her fitness and health regime she will probably be able to go for pretty much any dress that she wants and still look fabulous!

So, what is Anne doing as part of her Wedding Dress Diet regime? Well, she is certainly putting herself through her paces. She is said to have become vegetarian over the summer and has embarked upon intensive weight training. Anne religiously works out five days a week for two hours a day and has already shed the pounds as a result of her determination.

Lucky in love this time around?

Twenty nine year old Anne may have struck gold when it comes to her acting talents, having starred in some huge blockbuster movies such as The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada, but this luck has now always been evident in her love life.

In fact, one of her past loves, Raffaello Follieri, is now in prison in connection with dodgy financial dealings in which Anne found herself being implicated, even though she was eventually cleared of any suspicion. However, the actress seems to have found true love with her jewelry designer beau, Adam Shulman, who seems to be her soul mate.

Gingrich: Voters looking past his personal history (AP)

JOHNSTON, Iowa ? Newt Gingrich chided his GOP presidential opponents in a new TV ad for going negative and said separately Thursday that his checkered personal history wouldn't be to blame if he begins losing voter support in the run-up to Iowa's caucuses.

In an interview taped for Iowa Public Television, Gingrich said there will be some volatility in the polling ahead of the Jan. 3 precinct caucuses ? the first votes of the GOP nominating contest ? because of the attacks he's being subjected to on the airwaves.

"If you look at the amount of negative ads being run in Iowa by my opponents, I would be very surprised if we didn't see some ups and downs over the next three weeks," he said.

Rival Mitt Romney's latest attempt to sully Gingrich has been to cast him as an unreliable leader. Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum also have stepped up their criticism as Gingrich has surged here and in other states.

Perry's campaign piled on Thursday with a new television ad in Iowa that casts both Gingrich and Romney as Washington insiders lacking conservative credentials. Perry is portrayed as an outsider in an attempt to make the struggling candidate more appealing to voters who have had it with career politicians being in charge in Washington.

"Gingrich and Romney. Insiders," a voice says in the spot, adding that Perry's plan to create jobs and overhaul Washington "make him the outsider political insiders fear most."

In his latest ad, Gingrich said voters want to hear politicians offer solutions for the nation's problems, not personal attacks.

"These are challenging and important times for America. We want and deserve solutions," Gingrich said in the ad running in Iowa, trying to stay above the fray while still poking at his opponents. "Others seem to be more focused on attacks rather than moving the country forward. That's up to them."

Gingrich didn't name any of his rivals but it's clear he was referring to them.

Romney and his allies have unleashed an aggressive effort to derail Gingrich during campaign events, media interviews and independent advertising.

Despite the attacks, Gingrich said Thursday that he has surged ahead because voters are looking past his troubled personal history for a candidate who has had big achievements. Some of Gingrich's rivals have tried to exploit his confessions of marital infidelity, three wives and ethical problems while representing Georgia in Congress.

"I think voters have rendered judgment and they understand my weaknesses and they understand my strengths," Gingrich said. "They believe that at a time when the country is in deep trouble they want somebody who has big solutions and somebody who has a track record of getting big things done."

Gingrich said that as House speaker he balanced the federal budget and overhauled welfare, and that those accomplishments outweigh his negatives.

He added that he's comfortable with voters getting to know him and said they have accepted his explanations of his past personal misconduct.

"It's a balanced judgment and I'm very open to people getting to know me and getting to understand me," Gingrich said. "Part of it is that people accept the sincerity of my willingness to talk about my life."

Thursday's campaign flurry came hours before six of the candidates were to meet in Sioux City for a debate sponsored by Fox News Channel and the Iowa Republican Party, their final such meeting before the Jan. 3 caucuses.

With time running short, Romney's campaign redoubled efforts to cast Gingrich as an unreliable leader on a host of fronts, including in statements and web videos.

One such video showed an old clip of Gingrich praising Romney and saying: "Gov. Romney in his business career created more jobs than the entire Obama Cabinet combined, so he could actually talk about it."

In a statement, Romney himself chastised Gingrich for calling Rep. Paul Ryan's Medicare plan, which is popular among many conservatives, "right-wing social engineering." Romney also pointed to a comment Gingrich made last week to the "Coffee & Markets" podcast, where he said: "If there's a program which is very, very unpopular, should Republicans impose it? And my answer is no! When we passed welfare reform, 92 percent of the country favored it, including 88 percent of people on welfare. (Ronald) Reagan ran to be a popular president, not to maximize suicide."

Romney argued that Gingrich was calling Ryan's plan "suicide" and added: "I know it can be popular with some people to use extreme language, but we're talking about the presidency of the United States."

Romney's campaign on Thursday highlighted support from a group of former Reagan administration officials, although many of the names had been previously announced.

The announcement was a jab at Gingrich, who has begun been selling himself as a "Reaganite." After a candidates' debate last week, Gingrich's campaign immediately issued a statement declaring, "Newt Gingrich claims the Reagan mantle."

KS-herpesvirus induces reprogramming of lymphatic endothelial cells to invasive mesenchymal cells

Human tumor viruses contribute to 15-20% of human cancers worldwide. Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) is an etiological agent for Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and two other rare lymphoproliferative malignancies. KS is the most common cancer in HIV-infected untreated individuals and remains a primary cause of cancer deaths in many subequatorial African countries as a result of the AIDS pandemic. Researchers at the Institute of Biotechnology and Research Programs Unit (Genome-Scale Biology) at the University of Helsinki have discovered a novel viral oncogenesis mechanism in which KSHV oncogenes co-opt cellular signaling pathways and modify the cellular microenvironment more permissive for viral replication.

The findings by the group of Research Professor Pivi Ojala (Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki) demonstrates the first lymphatic-specific endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) induced by a human tumor virus. The virus-induced EndMT can contribute to development of KS by giving rise to infected, invasive cells, and providing the virus a permissive cellular microenvironment for efficient spread of the virus.

"This information can be used for developing targeted therapies to prevent or at least slow down the progression of KS in immunosuppressed patients", Dr. Ojala says.

By developing a novel three-dimensional (3D) cell model to better mimic the in vivo microenvironment, the researchers show that KSHV induces transcriptional reprogramming of primary lymphatic endothelial cells (LEC) to mesenchymal cells via EndMT, a process implicated in promoting tumor growth and cell invasiveness. Mesenchymal markers were found co-distributed in the same cells with KSHV in primary KS tumor samples, suggesting that the 3D culture in this work succeeds in recapitulating the known heterogeneity of the cell types in KS tumors.

The results also reveal a key enzyme in cancer cell invasion, MT1-MMP, as a previously unrecognized signaling molecule downstream of Notch to induce EndMT. Moreover, the 3D KSHV-LEC transcriptome showed significant up-regulation of invasion related genes, that were found co-regulated in 3D KSHV-LECs and KS biopsies and suggesting that virus-induced EndMT may contribute to development of KS. The results further demonstrate that the 3D culture provides a permissive microenvironment for continuous viral replication and persistence, indicating the importance of virus-cell interactions for viral spread and thereby for oncogenesis.

"The unraveled molecular mechanisms can lead to identification of novel cellular targets for pharmacological control in virus-associated cancers", Dr. Ojala says.

This work is a collaboration between the research teams headed by Kaisa Lehti, Kari Alitalo, Lauri Aaltonen, and Sampsa Hautaniemi (all from University of Helsinki), Chris Boshoff (UCL Cancer Institute, University College London) and Adam Grundhoff (Heinrich Pette Institute-Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology). The project involves scientists from two Academy of Finland National Centre of Excellence Programs, the Translational Genome-Scale Biology and Cancer Biology.

'Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn': Year In Review

We look back on an action-packed 2011 with Rob, Kristen, Jacob and more, in Twilight Tuesdays.
By Kara Warner

This week's Twilight Tuesdays is dedicated to the 10 best "Twilight" moments of 2011. Selecting the list proved to be a daunting task, considering an action-packed year full of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" news, interviews, photos, videos and more. Among the biggest highlights were saucy honeymoon photos, much ado about a sex scene, the birth of a vampire/human hybrid baby and the return of the fan-created "tent city" in support of the L.A. premiere of "Part 1."

10. Breaking Dawn Soundtrack Revealed
The vampire franchise has not only made its stars super famous, but an artist who lands on any of the films' best-selling soundtracks can expect to a special boost and instant exposure to a massive fanbase. Emerging acts like Sleeping At Last and Christina Perri, as well as rising stars like Bruno Mars have earned featured spots on the compilations. But "Twilight" stars have also contributed material, with Mia Maestro's "Carmen" making the cut.

9. The Twilight World Tour
There's nothing like the glitz of a red-carpet premiere to bring out the best in everyone, particularly with regard to wardrobe choices. When the "Breaking Dawn" cast embarked upon a whirlwind tour of world premieres, Twilighters couldn't wait to see who wore what. MTV News captured the glamorous looks in a handy photo gallery for repeated viewing pleasure.

8. Breaking Dawn Goes To Comic-Con
Those who've been following the franchise from the beginning will probably remember that it was at in 2008 San Diego Comic-Con that thousands of screaming fans descended upon the annual pop-culture convention and surprised convention-goers with their overwhelming enthusiasm. That first showing was such a huge success that going forward, Summit made Comic-Con a major priority with regard to promoting the films. At this summer's event MTV News got several particularly newsy tidbits about Renesmee and Jacob's imprinting, but we also really loved hearing Kristen Stewart talk about Bella's wedding.

7. Our Extended Breaking Dawn Interview
We've had the pleasure of catching up with the castmembers several times this year, so it was hard to narrow down all of those great interviews into just one favorite. That said, we loved hearing Robert Pattinson talk about Stewart playing a vampire in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2." And he really loved that she had to suffer through those uncomfortable contact lenses for the transition. "When she finally wore them and then was complaining about them every second of the day, it was kind of satisfying," he smiled.

6. The First Photo
Any piece of "Twilight" news is arguably cause for a few screams of delight for Twi-hards. But when Summit released the first steamy, swoon-worthy photo of newlyweds Edward and Bella in bed together, we could practically hear the collective squeals and sighs from fans around the world. Talk about starting the New Year off with a bang.

5. The Trailer
This one really needs no introduction or explanation, but if there were squeals when the first photo was released, there may well have been mind-explosions and full-on fainting when we premiered the first full-length "Breaking Dawn" trailer during the '11 MTV Movie Awards. The clip offered glimpses of the wedding, a shirtless Jacob Black, the Cullens, the wolf pack, a very unexpected and dangerous pregnancy ... everything a Twilighter hoped for.

4. Fan-Made Reactions To The Trailer
When we asked "Twilight" fans to send in their reactions to the trailer, we couldn't have anticipated all of the crying. Fans shed tears of joy, of course, and with those emotional outpourings clinched prominent placement on our list.

3. "MTV First: Breaking Dawn," The Highlight Reel
As we've already mentioned, we were lucky to spend time with the cast this year. One of the best interviews we conducted was as part of our "MTV First" series. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner introduced an exclusive clip and let loose in a lively Q&A. We even put together a highlight reel from the extra-special event that includes making Stewart uncomfortable and Pattinson complaining about Lautner's well-defined abs.

2. The L.A. Premiere
Excitement over the star-studded Los Angeles premiere of "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" was so intense it seemed to rival major Hollywood events like the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards. Celebrity super fans begged to attend and came out in droves to the premiere, many with their children and teenagers in tow. The fans' cheering was nonstop as the stars arrived on the black carpet, but it reached fever pitch with the arrival of Pattinson. Naturally, our quick chat with the heartthrob about all those sex scenes and their potential to give the film an R-rating made our Twilight Tuesdays "best of" list.

1. Fans Unite In "Tent City"
Make no mistake, we have high regard for Pattinson, Stewart, Lautner, director Bill Condon and everyone who worked on "Breaking Dawn," but when it comes to the franchise's key components, the fans are the real secret to its success. When we visited the dedicated, die-hard bunch that descended upon downtown Los Angeles to camp out, we were delighted by their enthusiasm. Gathered in appropriately named "tent city," they amassed several days before the premiere in a show of ultimate fandom.

So here's to you, "Twilight" fans, and see you again next year for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."
