Soon you?ll be able to send a little bit of the local art scene on your mail. The Dallas Museum of Art?s ?Razor? painting will be featured on a new Forever stamp scheduled to be released by the United States Postal Service early next year.

The 1924 Gerald Murphy work is one of a dozen featured in the??Modern Art in America? stamp collection, featuring art produced between 1913 and 1931. The stamp collection commemorates the 100th anniversary of the?1913 ?Armory Show,? also known as the ?International Exhibition of Modern Art.?

And, hey, you can go see the painting for free, starting Jan. 21.

Oil falls on weak demand outlook, US talks impasse

BANGKOK (AP) -- Oil prices fell Thursday after OPEC predicted weak demand for crude next year and critical budget negotiations in Washington reached an apparent impasse.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 40 cents to $86.37 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract finished 98 cents higher at $86.77 a barrel in New York on Wednesday after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced new stimulus measures to help the slow-growing U.S. economy.

But enthusiasm withered as signs emerged from Washington that President Barack Obama and Republican leaders were as far apart as ever on reaching a budget deal before year's end. Without an agreement, hundreds of billions of dollars in tax increases and government spending cuts will automatically take effect.

That prospect, known as the "fiscal cliff," has the force to throw the U.S. economy into recession, experts say, likely hurting demand for energy.

Meanwhile, at an OPEC meeting Wednesday, ministers agreed to keep their daily crude production target unchanged but failed to reach consensus on a new secretary general. OPEC also predicted less demand for oil next year in part because of weak economic growth.

Analysts at Capital Economics said in an analysis that "two of the few things that OPEC members can agree on are that the oil market is currently well supplied and that demand for the group's crude will fall next year as non-OPEC production increases further." Ample supplies and weak demand are two key factors that have kept oil prices in check in recent weeks.

Separately, the American Petroleum Institute said U.S. crude oil stocks rose nearly 4.3 million barrels in the week ending Dec. 7.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, fell 46 cents to $107.56 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Heating oil was steady at $2.967 a gallon.

? Natural gas fell 1.1 cent to $3.371 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1 cent to $2.637 a gallon.

Pilots approve new contract with American Airlines

DALLAS (AP) ? Pilots at American Airlines approved a new labor contract, which could clear the way for consideration of a merger with US Airways.

The pilots' union announced Friday that 74 percent of its members voted to ratify the contract. Pilots rejected a similar offer in August, but union leaders lobbied hard for passage the second time around.

Under the contract, pilots will get pay raises and own 13.5 percent of American Airlines' parent AMR Corp. after it emerges from bankruptcy protection.

Union officials and analysts say the vote gives AMR creditors certainty about the company's labor costs, making it easier for them to weigh which gives them more money ? American on its own, or getting bigger through a merger with US Airways.

"This contract represents a bridge to a merger with US Airways," said union spokesman Dennis Tajer. He said the vote "should not in any way be viewed as support for the American stand-alone plan or for this current management team."

American also hailed the vote as a key step in its turnaround after years of heavy losses.

The pilots' vote "gives us the certainty we need for American to successfully restructure," said AMR spokesman Bruce Hicks. He added that "the modernization of our company is well under way, and we remain focused on emerging as a competitive, world-class airline."

AMR and American filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2011. With the pilots' deal in hand, the company could exit Chapter 11 early next year, a faster reorganization than those in the last decade at United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Friday's vote filled in the last unknown piece in AMR's labor-cost puzzle. It will help AMR creditors weigh the company's plan to emerge from bankruptcy protection on its own versus a merger that would leave US Airways' executives running the combined operation. US Airways has vowed that if it prevails, it will keep the American Airlines name and be based in American's hometown of Fort Worth, Texas.

American has about 7,500 active pilots plus a few hundred others on furlough. The union said the vote to ratify the contract was 5,490 to 1,951.

The 6-year contract will raise pilots' pay by 4 percent on signing and 2 percent per year after that, with an adjustment in the third year to bring pay in line with that at other big airlines. The union will get 13.5 percent of the stock in the new AMR when it emerges from bankruptcy, which analysts estimate would amount to at least $100,000 per pilot.

In exchange, pilots will fly more hours and American will get more flexibility to outsource flying to other airlines.

American, which has already frozen pension plans and made other changes in benefits and work rules, is trying to use the bankruptcy process to cut annual labor costs by 17 percent or about $1 billion.

In recent months flight attendants and ground workers have ratified separate contracts that reduced benefits and outsourced thousands of jobs. Both groups won incentives that encouraged several thousand workers to take early retirement.

In February American announced plans to cut 14,000 jobs. After negotiations with the unions, that number fell to about 10,000. Voluntary departures will reduce layoffs to 3,000, according to Hicks, the AMR spokesman.

California tech company awarded $27 million in Best Buy trade-secret judgment

Best Buy got another little lump of coal dropped in its holiday stocking this week.

A federal court in California has entered a $27 million judgment against the consumer electronics giant for essentially swiping the idea for its Buy Back Program from a used-electronics seller called TechForward Inc.

Best Buy denied the charge and says it will fight the jury award of $22 million and the $5 million in punitive damages from the judge.

"We vehemently disagree with the size of the award given the facts of this case and intend to vigorously challenge this verdict through all appropriate and available means," Best Buy spokeswoman Paula Baldwin said.

The award isn't large enough to cause material harm to the Richfield-based consumer electronics giant, Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy said Thursday, Dec. 6, but it doesn't help Best Buy's reputation.

"They already are struggling in the eyes of the consumer, and something like this certainly doesn't help," he said.

Three days before Black Friday, Best Buy stunned Wall Street with a report that its same-store sales -- a key indicator of retail health -- had fallen 4.3 percent in the third quarter.

The company swung from a $156 million third-quarter profit last year to a $10 million loss this year, and revenue fell 3.5 percent to $10.8 billion for the quarter ended Nov. 3.

Analysts wonder if Best Buy can compete with online competitors like Amazon.com, and former chairman

and founder Richard Schulze is waiting off-stage, deciding what he should offer to buy the company.

Best Buy shares rose 2.3 percent Thursday, or 28 cents, to close at $12.36.

California-based TechForward sued Best Buy in 2011.

TechForward said Best Buy worked with it for several months to implement its Guaranteed Buyback Program in Best Buy stores, but then misappropriated TechForward's trade secrets to launch its own program.

Both programs allow customers to pay for the right to redeem newly bought electronics at a future date in exchange for a store credit. TechForward said other national consumer electronics retailers have implemented the Guaranteed Buyback Program.

Best Buy unveiled its Buy Back Program in February 2011 with a humorous Super Bowl commercial featuring pop star Justin Bieber and a befuddled Ozzy Osbourne.

"We are extremely pleased that the jury recognized Best Buy's misconduct, and we hope this verdict puts large companies on notice that there are real consequences to illegally exploiting start-up businesses like ours," TechForward co-founders Jade Van Doren and Marc Lebovitz said in a statement Wednesday.

Best Buy's Buy Back Program is still in operation but no longer accepts new customers, the store's website says.

It originally covered a variety of consumer electronics categories but was modified in response to customer feedback, Baldwin said.

"What we discovered in the first year of the program was that customers were most enthusiastic about this kind of guaranteed return with mobile phones. So about a year in, we re-evaluated the program and chose to offer what we call Trade-In Plus for mobile devices exclusively," she said.
