Google offers free web hosting through sites.google.com, and it claims to be free, but what is the real deal? Let?s take a closer look at Google?s free web hosting, to determine if it will work for your needs.
If your goal is to operate a small website for personal purposes, for a church, or for a small community, then free Google web hosting is right for you. The large variety of free templates and tools can make starting your site very easy, even if you?ve never done it before.
The templates are creative and designed well. They include different features: The project Wiki template, for example, allows you and members of your team to go back and update as you need. A free calendar is also available, and that can come in very handy for websites that are used to announce different events.
The Classroom site template is designed for teachers, and it can be used to update information for students and parents. You can use this to update your students and their families about events such as field trips, and post information that you would otherwise have to hand out. Students and parents can use the contact form to e-mail you.
Other templates include the company intranet (internal website for a business) which has a more business-like design, as you would expect. Again there is a calendar for upcoming events and a section for news. There is also a family site template with a more informal design and plenty of space for posting photos.
You can choose to make your site public or private, depending on whether you want everyone to be able to access it, or only a few people of your choosing.
Being a free web hosting account, it does some limitations. This is not something that you would use for ecommerce sites with a shopping cart, or where you could store huge video downloads, etc. But it is great for small sites used for personal purposes or for groups.
If you need to upgrade, there is a Premier Edition that gives you access to 10GB of storage, which will be enough for most sites. You can also have email storage and free voice calls through your Google Apps Premier Edition account.
If your goal is to start different sites or to use a site for commercial business, you might want to own your own domain. You can do that through Google Apps which allows you to point your Google site design at your own domain.
If you choose to use the free service, to some extent you are at the mercy of Google. If they think your site is not ethical or if they think it is objectionable in any way, they hold the right of shutting it down. Of course, this is not likely to be a problem if you have a site that is legal and ethical. But that possibility is something else you need to consider before you use a free hosting service.
